Coast News brings home first-place awards

Encinitas — The Coast News recently earned two first-place awards from the Association of Free Community Papers, or AFCP. Nearly 2,000 entries were received from 138 companies in 60 categories by the AFCP this year.
Randy Kalp, a crime reporter for the Coast News, won a first-place award in the “Community Service/Editorial” category for his three-part series on heroin abuse in North County (see Kalp’s winning series “The New Face of Heroin”). Judges commented that Kalp’s stories “made a difference in the community.”
The Coast News also won a first-place award in the “Outstanding Publication for rack delivered publications” category. The Coast News is “full of great photography” and has “good editorial” according to judges from the AFCP.
Coast News Publisher Jim Kydd was on hand in Myrtle Beach, S.C. to accept the awards. “I am truly honored and very proud of my dedicated staff for earning these awards,” Kydd said.
Will Kydd’s dedicated staff earn a raise? Stay tuned.
