Club names Youth of the Year

VISTA — The Boys & Girls Club of Vista celebrated its Youth of the Year awards April 7. Aamirah Syed, a Vista High student, was named the club’s Youth of the Year winner.
The Youth of the Year program recognizes phenomenal contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. Aamirah helped coordinate the Leaders in Training career development for the Boys & Girls Club. In addition, she helped the Boys & Girls Club with various special fundraisers helping the club keep its dues at just $50 a year.
“Aamirah is an outstanding club member and brightens everyone’s day. She devotes 100 percent of her talent to enhance the club and works on building self-esteem, embracing diversity, as well promoting positive values for all club members,” said Raul Castillo, Boys & Girls Club of Vista’s program director.
Jordan Kaatz was awarded Youth of the Year and Scholar of the Year for the club’s Madison Middle School location. Nicole Rivera was named Athlete of the Year for the Madison Middle School site.
Michael Rodriguez was awarded Youth of the Year, Derek Nguyen Scholar of the Year and Ryan Davis was awarded with Athlete of the Year for the club’s Vista Magnet Middle School site.
The Rod Waufle Basketball & Baseball MVP & Good Character awards were given to Shaniya Mitchell and Mark Scheble.
