City sponsors day to encourage girls

SAN MARCOS — Make way for tomorrow’s superstars! A record class of 22 San Marcos girls spent a day sprucing up and learning the basics of beauty and confidence at the city-sponsored Just Us Girlz event at City Hall on Jan. 25.
Just Us Girlz is a personal enrichment program for girls ages 11 to 16 that has been put on every year under a variety of different names.
Attendees got a crash course in interviewing and speaking skills in addition to learning how to do their hair and apply makeup to best effect.
“It’s a lot of fun just experimenting with things, like a lot of them have crazy hairstyles that they probably will never have again,” reigning Miss San Marcos Maxine Marshall said. Marshall helped mentor the girls.
In addition to Marshall, nearly a dozen contestants for this year’s Miss San Marcos and Teen Miss San Marcos pageants were also on hand, getting a taste of community service. Miss San Marcos 2005 Molly Lindhart coordinated the runway show that climaxed the day. She also directs the city’s Miss San Marcos pageant.
“I think both events help young ladies with their confidence and being out of their comfort zone, showing them skills that they can take elsewhere throughout their life,” Lindhart said.
