CHS drama students take center stage

CARLSBAD — Carlsbad High School’s Advanced Theatre and Technical Theatre students, under the guidance of teacher Monica Hall, placed sixth in Sweepstakes out of 66 schools at the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California Fall Drama Festival. The October Festival was held at the new Central Los Angeles High School for the Performing Arts.
“We were the only San Diego County high school competing at DTASC,” Hall said. “The extremely stiff competition included several performing arts magnet schools.”
Sets and Lighting Designs by William Catlin, Jay Rodriguez and Gabe Torres won first place. Graphics and Publicity Designs by Jessica Jennings, Nick Timm, and Jeremy Waits, ranked in the top 10. The “Hair” musical group of Nick Bennings, Rachel Davis, Kim Gosnell, Trio Harris, Teddi Johnson, Sheila O’Neill, Jamen Nanthakumar, Mark Patricio, Jessica Zoutendyk placed fourth. Hannah Long’s Audition Piece placed sixth. Many other CHS students and groups earned honorable mention and other accolades.
Following in the winning footsteps of their CHS fellow students, Aviara Oaks and Calavera Hills Middle School theatre groups won big at the November DTASC festival.
