CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad High School Baseball Booster Club will host the first annual Carlsbad Home Run Derby and Alumni Game during the Presidents’ Day weekend at Carlsbad High School. The Carlsbad Home Run Derby will be held Feb. 12 followed by the CHS Winter Varsity Team taking on a team made up of top alumni players led by honorary coaches Ralph Cripe and Joe Pimentel Feb. 13.
The event will raise money for the Carlsbad High School Baseball program. Proceeds will also be used to help achieve the Booster Club’s mission of enhancing the environment of Carlsbad High School Baseball with emphasis on community, education, sportsmanship, facility and equipment upgrades and fun.
Everyone is welcome to “go yard” at the Home Run Derby with five divisions ranging from 9- and 10-year-olds to high school seniors, with a maximum of 50 entrants per division. Walk-up entries are welcome provided space is available. Winners of each division will receive a trophy and a gold Champion T-shirt. Contests will run from 9 a.m. to dusk. A $20 entry fee includes an event T-shirt, and a hot dog lunch.
During the Home Run Derby event, the Carlsbad Educational Foundation will host a silent auction featuring sports memorabilia, sporting equipment and collectibles. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Foundation to support the district-wide music program funded at all elementary schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Opening ceremonies for the alumni game will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 13, with the first pitch thrown at 10 a.m. In addition to Cripe and Pimentel, the alumni team will feature the likes of MLB pitcher Scott Karl, Lansing Lugnut’s John Talley, Palomar Head Coach Buck Taylor, CHS Coach Chris Greene, the Frazee boys, Keegan Moore, Adam Duncan, Ryan Hendricks, Danny Carafa and many more former stars.
Following the alumni game will be the CHS Varsity Winter League finale against Rancho Buena Vista High School featuring AFLAC All American Tony Walters and Kalen Pimentel of Little League World Series fame.
