Carlsbad summer activities

CARLSBAD — The city’s parks and pools are Carlsbad getting ready for summer fun.The city of Carlsbad is looking for residents to lend a helping hand on Village H North trail from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 15. Volunteers are encouraged to wear close-toed shoes suitable for hiking, long pants, sunscreen and a hat while they spruce up the trail area. Subscribe to the “Happy Trails” e-newsletter to stay updated on upcoming trail volunteer opportunities, highlights from past events and other ways to enjoy the 46 miles of trails in Carlsbad.The city commemorated National Trails Day June 1, with a 3.5-mile group hike on one of the city’s newest trails, the Robertson Ranch trail. Nearly 100 hikers began at Robertson Ranch and headed north on the new trail toward Lake Calavera and Mount Calavera, a former volcano, learning new things about Carlsbad’s natural environment along the way.Residents can also be a part of the action as a Carlsbad Triathlon volunteer.

Want to be a part of the Carlsbad Triathlon race weekend on July 13 and July 14? You may not be interested in swimming, running and biking, but you can play a key role in this city tradition as a volunteer. Volunteer opportunities for the Wellness Expo, taking place July 13, include checking in athletes and handing out goodie bags. Then on race day, July 14, volunteers are needed for body-marking, assisting with timing at the finish line and passing out refreshments at the hospitality booth. Getting more pet-friendly all the time, the city invites residents to stay in shape with your dog. Try one of the city’s K-9 fitness classes. You will walk and run with your dog while using resistance bands during the workout, then wrap up with a yoga-inspired cool down. The K-9 Fitness class is held at the Rancho Carrillo Trail from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the Hosp Grove Trail from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Fridays. Making plans for the summer? The city offers a variety of camps for youngsters of all ages and interests. These camps include:

— European Multi-Sports camp, where children will play sports like croquet, cricket and bocce ball

— Master Your Sport Game-Changer camp, which introduces new sports like Xtreme dodge ball and RallyCart racing each day

— “So You Think You Can Dance” camp, exploring various dance styles

— Youth volleyball camp, designed for beginning and intermediate players

— Challenger Sports First Kicks and Mini-Soccer camp, introducing small children to soccer basics

— Counselor-in-Training camp for middle and high school students interested in building leadership skills as junior counselors in camps.

Registration is now open for the 3-on-3 boys basketball tournament presented by the city of Carlsbad and Dick’s Sporting Goods July 13. The tournament, open to boys grades three through 12, will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real mall at 2525 El Camino Real. Admission is free for spectators and all ages will enjoy the excitement, featuring music, food, vendors, games, demos and more. Cost is $125 per team.
