CARLSBAD — Carlsbad City Library’s spelling bee team The Spellbinders is preparing for a fundraiser called The Bee at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at The Pavilion at The Four Points by Sheraton San Diego, 8110 Aero Drive. The Bee will benefit the San Diego Council on Literacy, which provides funding and support for literacy programs throughout the county, including Carlsbad.
The Spellbinders features one library staff member, Deanna Westphal, and two of the program’s volunteer tutors, Meli Barrett and Gail Rosemeyer.
The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres, desserts and entertainment and continues with the spelling competition itself from 6:15 to 9 p.m. Tickets for spectators are $10 and includes hors d’oeuvres, prizes and a cash bar.
“Our team has been practicing for this friendly spelling competition for adults,” said Carrie Scott, community outreach supervisor for Carlsbad City Library and San Diego Council on Literacy board member. “The Bee is a fun way for us to support the San Diego Council on Literacy, of which we’re proud to be a member. Our team will be competing with other teams throughout the county and we plan to make North County proud.”
Carlsbad City Library’s Literacy Services program provides tutoring to English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Each learner studies with a trained volunteer tutor in a friendly and supportive environment. All services are free and confidential.
