Carlsbad girl saves mother from attacker

CARLSBAD — An 11-year-old girl helped save her mother from an abusive ex-boyfriend’s savage beating Thursday.

Carlsbad police arrested 31-year-old Michael Carabajal, who allegedly held the adult woman against her will, choked her unconscious and raped her, according to a press release. The victim also suffered a broken leg and transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries.

At about 2:48 p.m., CPD received a 9-1-1 call from the girl, who told dispatchers her mother needed help at their south Carlsbad home. The girl told authorities her mother failed to pick her up from school, and was told by her mother not to come home after the girl called her mom.

About 10 minutes later, the girl arrived at her residence and allegedly witnessed Carabajal battering the victim.

When police arrived on the scene, their investigation took them to the 7800 block of Calle Mejor, where they arrested Carabajal.

He was booked into the Vista County Jail on charges of attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, stalking, residential burglary, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury.
