Carlsbad company donates Ronald’s red boots

CARLSBAD — It was an unusual request. “One thousand size-14, shiny, red, work boots with yellow laces, please.” When Ronald McDonald House of San Diego asked Phoenix Footwear to donate the boots for its first ever Red Shoe Day event Sept. 21, all it took was one visit to the house and the Carlsbad-based manufacturer was a shoe-in.
Designed especially for the event, the giant red boots will serve as a place to bank cash gifts as volunteers gather donations at street intersections around town to help families dealing with a child’s medical crisis.
“We are overwhelmed by the families dealing with so much, and the support that is given to them at the new House,” said Rusty D. Hall, president and CEO of Phoenix Footwear. “Many of our employees have been touched personally by Ronald McDonald House. For us, it’s a way we can bring something back to the community.”
The 20-person Phoenix Footwear staff proudly volunteered with red boots in hand on that day. In fact, their office closed that morning for the big event. “Everyone in the office has rallied around this event. It’s really been fun,” Hall said.
For 30 years, San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House has provided more than 140,000 nights of lodging for more than 14,000 families whose children face life-threatening illnesses and are receiving treatment at area hospitals. For more information, go to or call (858) 467-4750.
