CARLSBAD — The 26th annual Carlsbad 5000 will take over the scenic oceanfront streets of downtown Carlsbad April 3. Featuring a 3.1-mile seaside course, scenic ocean views and a post-race beer garden, the event features a series of nine races throughout the day.
“We’re looking forward to making the 2011 event better than any other,” said Shannon Davis, event manager. “Between Saturday’s Junior Carlsbad, Sunday’s infamous post-race party and a free weekend Health and Fitness Expo over the course of the weekend, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy at the Party by the Sea.”
Race day begins at 7:05 a.m. with the first of nine races for walkers, invited wheelchair athletes and runners of all abilities. The main event, featuring professional athletes, begins at 12:05 p.m.
Race weekend kicks off with the Junior Carlsbad on March 31. More than 2,000 speedsters ages 2 through 12 will take part in a variety of age appropriate races.
A free Health & Fitness Expo takes place on race weekend, running from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 2 and 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 3 on Roosevelt Street between Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive. The Expo serves as Carlsbad 5000 race registration headquarters on April 2 starting at 10 a.m., allowing participants to pick up their race number, timing chip, T-shirt and goodie bag.
