Birdseye Kitchen wins Taste of Leucadia Award

ENCINITAS — Leucadia’s newest restaurant has won the highest honor at the town’s fourth annual Taste of Leucadia, the Platinum Plate Award.

The people’s choice award is given to the leading vote getter of an online poll of people who attended the event, which gives attendees a chance to sample to wares of Leucadia’s dining establishments.

Birdseye Kitchen, a Southeast Asian fusion restaurant that opened its doors in March, took home top honors for its sample of Yellow Curry with organic vegetables over jasmine rice.

“The dish was gluten free, dairy free and piping hot on the cold blustery night, which appealed to a wide audience,” Leucadia 101 MainStreet Association Executive Director Carris Rhodes wrote in a news release.

Owner and Head Chef Vasama Morris, a Leucadia resident, used the event as the unofficial debut to the community. The menu features recipes on the menu that come from her family’s favorite dishes.

“We were seriously beyond surprised we won,” Morris said. “We heard about the number of attendees and were concerned with being able to keep up. (Winning) was a wonderful surprise.”

More than 1,000 people attended the sold-out Taste of Leucadia on April 7.
