CARLSBAD — The Mitchell Thorp Foundation presented the Mitchell Thorpe award to nine outstanding baseball players, ages 10 to 14, who represent Carlsbad Youth Baseball (CYB) and La Costa Youth Organization (LCYO) baseball programs.
Players were recognized for their passion for baseball; willingness to help others; leadership that has earned them the respect of their teammates and coaches, through hard work and dedication; strong academic standing; and involvement in community service. The qualities represent those of Thorp, who displayed all before his passing five years ago, according to his mother, Beth Thorp, executive director of the Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF), based in Carlsbad.
MTF was founded in 2009 by Brad and Beth Thorp in honor of their teenage son, who died of an undiagnosed illness in 2008. The foundation’s mission is to help families in the region, who have children suffering from life-threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders, by providing financial, emotional and resources to their desperate situations. The Foundation also provides scholarships to CYB and LCYO for those who cannot afford to play the game that Mitchell loved so much.
The foundation is supported by corporate donations, private donations, endowments, legacy donations, grants, and proceeds raised from the annual MTF 5K Run/Walk, held in February at Thorp Field (named in honor of Mitchell in 2009) at Poinsettia Park, Carlsbad. This year, the foundation will also host the first Pillar of Hope Fashion Show on Sept. 6 in Rancho Santa Fe.
