Arts Office lines up new year exhibitions

CARLSBAD — The city of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office begins the year 2011 with a range of programs and events for all ages and interests. Free exhibitions at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery and presentations and performances at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, both located in the Carlsbad City Library complex, offer Carlsbad residents and visitors opportunities to participate or just relax and enjoy the program from a seat in the audience. Two ticketed events bring exceptional performing artists to Carlsbad. Upcoming events in the Cannon Art Gallery, 1775 Dove Lane, open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. will include:
— DeLoss McGraw: Recent Paintings in Response to Günter Grass’s “The Tin Drum” through Jan. 16.
— The 2011 Juried Biennial Exhibition, Jan. 30 through March 18, will be open to all San Diego County visual artists and limited to works created within the past two years.
— A free Family Open Studio will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 19. The hands-on art-making event is designed for all ages, families tour the exhibition in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery. No reservations required.
In the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium, Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane will be:
— Opera Previews at 10 a.m. Jan. 29, beginning with “Turandot,” Opera Previews offer an in-depth look at the history, musical style and story of each production in the San Diego Opera season by musicologist Ron Shaheen.
— International Guitar Night at 7 p.m. Feb. 2. Tickets available at (760) 438-5996 or www.museumofmakingmusic.org. The Cultural Arts Office joins forces with the Museum of Making Music for the first of three annual concerts.
— “This Is Jazz!” at 4 p.m. Feb. 5. Early New Orleans and Chicago jazz. Artists to be Announced
— Bella A Cappella at 2 p.m. Feb. 27, eight singing groups with no instruments equal pure harmony. Tickets are $5 for CFA members, $10 general admission.
