ENCINITAS — Each of the 2009 Encinitas Arts Alive Banners will be auctioned off at 2 p.m. May 31 at the Cardiff Town Center. The banners have been hanging on lampposts since February from La Costa Avenue in Leucadia, south to Cardiff’s Restaurant Row and the Cardiff Town Center along Coast Highway 101 for the public to enjoy. This year, a number of banners honor the surfing culture of the coastal communities. The proceeds of the banner auction are split 50/50 between the artists and the three presenting groups.
If you missed them, entries to the event sponsored each year by the 101 Artists’ Colony, Cardiff-by-the-Sea Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association, can be seen at www.artsaliveencinitas.com. Bids are being taken at DEMA at (760) 943-1950.
Every youngster who surfs in Encinitas knows the face of surfer Rob Machado. Artist Faith Lindley has painted Machado’s portrait on one of the 7-foot banners that has been on display in front of Hansen’s surf shop. Lindley is donating her share of the proceeds (half of the auction sale price) to the Rob Machado Foundation, a nonprofit that provides funding for environmental programs focused on helping children understand their contribution toward a healthy earth. For details, visit www.robmachadofoundation.org. This year’s beneficiary of the Rob Machado Foundation is the Cardiff Education Foundation. This foundation is helping the Cardiff School District develop and implement a reduce-reuse-recycle effort. With this new recycling program, the school district will eliminate approximately 18 tons of trash per year in our local landfill and will prevent approximately 100 pounds of carbon from being released into the atmosphere.
Lindley graduated from San Dieguito Academy in 2007 and attended UC Santa Barbara as a painting major in the College of Creative Studies. Since 2002, she has been a student of Ron and Vanessa Lemen and currently attends their Encinitas-based art school, Studio 2nd Street Encinitas.
In addition, most residents of North County are familiar with the giant surfing mural on the ORCO building on the east side of I-5 between Poinsettia Avenue and Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. Local artist Ron Merino captured his “Surfer on the Sunset Red Wave” for his banner contribution that will be up for auction.
