Art show benefits kids programs

Oceanside — The It’s Now It’s Wow art show at Linksoul gallery featured world-renowned spray paint artist Chor Boogie and 60 works by local students to benefit North County Lifeline youth programs on May 14. The fundraiser was brainstormed and organized by kids in North County Lifeline youth programs.
“It’s a youth development model program,” Donald Stump, executive director of North County Lifeline, said. “The ideas come from the kids.”
Chor Boogie, an Oceanside native who is now based in San Francisco, demonstrated live painting. Boogie is known for his expressive use of line, shape and color.
Student artwork included acrylic on canvas, photography, glass mosaics and ceramic masks. Yanny Hernandez, age 16, entered six paintings in the show. Yanny said each painting took him a week to complete.
A silent auction and raffle drawings helped raise funds for North County Lifeline after school programs that help kids with homework and teach them art and sports.
“The target is middle school students, but brothers and sister started to attend,” Leisea Felt, volunteer coordinator for North County Lifeline, said. “We have kids from (age) 6 to 17.”
Community role models are an important component of the youth programs. Experts share skills that range from glass mosaic art techniques to financial planning.
“North County Lifeline is a safety net for kids,” Stump said. “Doing this event provides a lot of positive opportunities for kids.”
In addition to youth programs North County Lifeline provides counseling, parenting classes, emergency assistance and other services.
