CARLSBAD — City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation invites residents to participate in an Arbor Day celebration from 9 to 11 a.m. April 24 at Aviara Community Park, 6435 Ambrosia Lane. Representatives from Anderson’s La Costa Nursery, West Coast Arborists, Davey Tree Expert Company, and SDG&E’s Vegetation Management Department will be on hand with informational booths and displays.
Attendees will plant trees, restore irrigation basins and pick up litter. Tools will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring work gloves, hats and shovels, if possible. Participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes. Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. In the case of heavy rain, the event will be canceled.
“This event is a great way to bring together volunteers who care about keeping Carlsbad’s parks and open spaces beautiful and well populated with trees,” said Kyle Lancaster, Parks and Recreation superintendent. “For the past several years, Carlsbad has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This event helps us retain this national designation.”
Volunteer registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to print and fill out a volunteer application prior to attending the event; applications are available at www.carlsbadca.gov. Volunteer applications must be handed in at the event sign-in table.
Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska. Among other benefits, trees reduce the erosion of topsoil, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate temperatures, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife.
