Animal Services searching for dog that killed smaller dog, injured owner

CARLSBAD — Animal Services are searching for a dog that killed a smaller dog and injured the owner June 29. The attack happened in a grassy area at Pine Street and Coast Highway 101 in Carlsbad.
The female owner of two small dogs was attacked when a man with a brown German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix walked past. The Shepherd/Retriever attacked and severely injured one of the small dogs, a Pomeranian, where it later died of its injuries at a veterinarian’s office.
During the attack, the German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever also bit the owner of the Pomeranian in the hand. The person with the Shepherd/Retriever then ran from the scene and was last seen heading northbound along Carlsbad Boulevard. That person is described as a young white male with short blond hair, in his late teens or early twenties, and approximately 6 feet tall. He had been wearing a dark T-shirt and unknown-colored shorts, and he had a skateboard.
“Whenever a person is bitten by a dog, we must place that dog into quarantine to ensure that the victim does not have to undergo rabies treatment,” said Dawn Danielson, director of Animal Services.
A $1,000 reward has been offered by a Good Samaritan for any information leading to the owner of the dog. Tips can be submitted by phone at (619) 743-0463.
