Add a little anthropology to your spring

OCEANSIDE — MiraCosta College is offering an orientation counseling course and new anthroplogy classes for the upcoming spring semester:The orientation class will be Tuesdays, noon to 12:50 p.m. at MiraCosta College’s Community Learning Center, 1831 Mission Ave., in Room 105.

This credit course focuses on the practical tools, information, strategies and skills development necessary for academic success during students’ first year in college. It emphasizes the function of higher education, study skills, introduction and application of academic support services and personal development skills. This course is recommended for first year college students or re-entry students. CSU transferable.

Classes offered will include Native American Cultures, a three-unit class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive. This course explores various Native American cultures, both historic and current, including their environments, economic systems, family structures, arts and rituals.

A second anthropology class will be Primate Behavior and Ecology, also a three unit class Tuesdays and Thursdays 2 to 3:20 p.m., that requires a research project at the San Diego Zoo and/or the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This course explores animal behavior from an evolutionary perspective. Examples come from studies of primates, but the principles are relevant to all types of animals. Spring classes begin Jan. 13.
