DEL MAR — The Del Mar Foundation recently named five members to its 2011 board of directors. Phil Blair, Judd Halenza, Susane Roberts and Julie Maxey-Allison and Bill Michalsky were chosen to serve three-year terms.
Blair is executive officer of Manpower Staffing of San Diego Inc., the county’s fourth largest local for-profit employer. He is on the board of the Greater San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and previously served on the boards of ConVis, LEAD San Diego, the San Diego Red Cross and the Center City Development Corporation. A former San Diego City Councilman, Blair served four years on the Fair Political Practice Commission in Sacramento.
Halenza is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who also attended Stanford University for graduate work in statistics. Following combat missions in Vietnam, Halenza returned home and began working in real estate and other investments.
“In my mind the Del Mar Foundation supports what the city of Del Mar stands for — a small town where the citizens work together to make it a better place to live, both for ourselves and our children,” Halenza said, adding that he joined the foundation to “be a part of that process.”
Roberts was born in Alabama, graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in business and has lived in Del Mar since 1985. Before becoming a full-time Realtor, she was a certified public accountant with KPMG in Los Angeles. In fact, she and fellow Del Mar Foundation member Kathy Finnell were two of the first female CPAs with KPMG.
“I feel so fortunate to be able to live in such a wonderful community,” said Roberts, who is serving as the organization’s treasurer. “It gives me great pleasure to give back.”
Maxey-Allison, the foundation’s new hospitality chairwoman, grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from the UCLA. She lived in New York City while working at various publications, including Ladies’ Home Journal, Self, New York and the New York Times Magazine. She eventually switched careers to real estate sales and returned to Del Mar.
Michalsky was born and raised in Pasadena and graduated from the University of Southern California. He moved to Del Mar in 1970 and worked in the telecommunications industry until 2002. He is currently vice president of Worldwide Operations at Harbor Lane Associates.
In the last 15 years Michalsky has served on the city’s Design Review Board, Planning Commission and San Dieguito Lagoon Preservation Committee. He is also a board member on Friends of the Del Mar Library and Friends of the San Dieguito River Valley.
The group replaces retiring board members Joe Bruderer-Schwab, Lars Fahlberg, Lynn Gaylord, Joel Holliday and Lisa Lutz.
The Del Mar Foundation was founded in 1982 as an outgrowth of the Del Mar Days community celebration. For more than 20 years the organization has continued to promote civic pride and cohesiveness, acquire and preserve open space, improve beaches and parklands, raise and grant funds and sponsor diverse cultural programs and community events in the city.
The organization is best known for its summer concerts at Powerhouse Park, supporting the Del Mar Junior Lifeguard Program, contributing funds toward the restoration and construction of the Del Mar Library and Powerhouse Community Center and helping to preserve the lagoons to the north and south of the city.
