CARLSBAD — On May 24, Buena Vista Elementary School will be celebrating several achievements, including its 50-year anniversary from 4 to 7 p.m. on campus at 1330 Buena Vista Way.One of the oldest schools in Carlsbad, it was recently on the chopping block with the school board due to low enrollment. School parents were able to convince the board that the community that feeds the school is not an aging community and it has been refilling with new families, which is a common real estate cycle. In addition, it has recently been awarded the California Distinguished School Award, and it was the only Carlsbad school to receive this award this year.
The celebration will be especially festive because this school has been on the chopping block three times in the last seven to 10 years.
Supporters believe that low enrollment may be caused by parents afraid to send their child to a school that may close and neighborhood families want the entire district to know the school is healthy and thriving.
