Sewage spill fouls San Marcos Creek

CARLSBAD — An estimated 31,650 gallons of sewage leaked from the Meadowlark Water Reclamation Facility in Carlsbad. The facility recovered an estimated 21, 600 gallons of sewage, leaving approximately 10, 050 gallons to flow into a storm drain that leads to the San Marcos Creek.
The spill, which was caused by a break in a six-inch sewer line, was discovered at 8:00 AM and ended at 8:10 AM when crews from the Vallecitos Water District diverted flows back to the treatment plant.
Signs warning of sewage contamination have been posted along the San Marcos Creek where it crosses through the La Costa Country Club and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
