Victim in serious condition after attempted murder-suicide shooting

CARLSBAD — A 63-year-old female is in serious but stable condition after being shot by her neighbor in an attempted murder-suicide on Monday afternoon.

The male suspect allegedly shot the victim with a handgun before fatally shooting himself, according to Carlsbad Police Department reports.

The shooting took place in the garden area of the Tavarua senior apartment complex on the 3500 block of Harding Street in Carlsbad, where both the suspect and victim lived.

Residents of the complex who witnessed the crime called 911.

Carlsbad Police officers arrived at the scene minutes later and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified the 87-year-old shooter.

The victim, who is not being identified by police due to the ongoing investigation, was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital by helicopter.

The Carlsbad Police Department is currently investigating the relationship between the victim and suspect.
