Team combines top grades with soccer skills

COAST CITIES — On March 18, Francis Parker School’s 2008-2009 Boys’ Soccer team was named the California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section, All-Academic champions for the second consecutive year, with a team grade-point average of 3.61. The team will be honored at the CIFSD board of managers meeting April 28. Additionally, the team is nominated to the State CIF for state recognition.
Bill McLauglin of the CIF San Diego section said, “The educational athletic experience is about teaching the values of teamwork, commitment to others, and selfless dedication to representing the school and improving the community. The CIFSDS recognizes these school teams’ effort in academic success, earning the highest unweighted grade-point average by all members of the team in the San Diego section. The CIFSDS is pleased to recognize these schools’ faculty, staff, team members and their coaches for their achievement.”
Additionally, on March 7, Parker’s Varsity Boy’s Soccer team put up a fight in the Division Championship game against Mater Dei. The Lancers finished the season as the runner-up in the CIFSDS Division IV Championship.
Local members of the team include Cardiff-by-the-Sea junior Kevin Martin, First Team-Coastal South League; Carmel Valley junior Andrew Grigoriadis, Del Mar sophomore Willy Avery and Del Mar senior Nick Dutton, Rancho Santa Fe residents, sophomore Sean Gruen, junior Henry Thurman and freshman Matt Nussbaum.
