CARLSBAD — Those eager for the new high school to be built in the northeast quadrant of the city may have to wait another year, school officials said.
The Army Corps of Engineers told officials with the Carlsbad Unified School District that current plans for the school affect the protected wetlands near the property and that changes may have to be made to the plans to reduce the impact.
A redesign of the plans for the school to be built on the corner of College Boulevard and Cannon Road could cost up to $100 million and delay the project another year.
A local conservation group challenged the school board over its environmental impact report. Diana Nygaard from Preserve Calavera had said concerns surrounded the lack of buffer between the school and the nearby protected habitat.
At the school board meeting May 27, Superintendent John Roach said he hoped a compromise can be reached between the district and the corps.
The proposed high school will accommodate nearly 1,500 students and relieve crowding at the 50-year-old campus on Monroe Street.
