DEL MAR — A strong marketing program and community relations was credited for Pelly’s highly successful first year at the San Diego County Fairgrounds.
Matt Clay, general manager of the two 18-hole mini-courses, told directors of the 22nd District Agricultural Association during their monthly meeting Feb. 10 that 61,923 rounds of golf were played — well above the early projection of 55,000. Revenue from groups, parties and individuals brought in $468,754 compared with $283,125 that was forecast before the opening of the center.
The twin courses have an ocean theme. One has a surfing motif and the other depicts marine life.
Also during the meeting, General Manager Tim Fennell reported the arena roof is nearing completion although there has been some delay due to the inclement weather. He predicted the cost of the project will be covered by increased use with several major events already indicating their interest.
Katie Phillips, exhibits manager, told directors she expects strong participation in the various competitive categories of the fair that include an international beer division, design in wood, digital arts, fine arts, flower and garden show, gems and minerals, home and hobby, photography and photojournalism, student show case, kids best, junior amateur horse show, junior livestock, small animals and pets.
She noted the photo competition “has exploded” with almost everyone carrying a camera and the ease of taking pictures.
In keeping with the fair’s “family affordable” theme, Phillips announced that a special season admission ticket available to the public will cost $22 and be good for the 22 days of the fair. Many exhibitors become regular attendees and will benefit from the reduced rate, Phillips said. Fair dates are June 12 through July 5.
