Man posing as utility worker tries to enter elderly couple’s home

ENCINITAS — The Sheriff’s department is asking residents to practice caution following a man’s failed attempt to gain access to a Leucadia home. 

A man posing as a utility worker with the San Dieguito Water District attempted to gain access to an elderly couple’s home in the 1200 block of Eolus Avenue the morning of Dec. 6, according to Marlee Chapman, the sheriff’s supervising crime prevention specialist.

The man said that he needed to check the home’s water pressure. One of the homeowners asked for official identification; the man returned to his car and drove off.

According to Chapman, the only descriptions of the man: Hispanic, large build and wearing a grey jacket.

In light of the incident, residents are urged to: never open the door for someone they don’t recognize, always ask for identification from city workers, request the name and phone number of workers’ supervisors and trust their instincts.
