MAEGA serves up tasty scholarship fundraiser

SOLANA BEACH — How to parcel out $55,000 to approximately 80 scholarship applicants from the five high schools in the San Dieguito Union High School district is a decision facing the Mexican American Educational Guidance Foundation scholarship committee headed by Fran Fenical.
The first step in the process is the 39th annual scholarship Mexican barbecue dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 31 at Tony’s Jacal, 621 Valley Ave. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for adults and $6 for children
Net proceeds from the event plus contributions from community organizations and individuals will determine the total amount available for scholarships according to Bruce Wadman, co-treasurer with Betty Byrd. Last year, 52 applicants received a total of $59,000 in scholarships. In addition, $19,500 was dispersed to 21 students who are in their second year in college.
MAEGA is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization that was founded by the late Don Lapham, publisher of the San Dieguito Citizen, in 1970 and is headed by Dick Wheelock, retired Del Mar physician. The scholarship committee includes Linda Grensted, Caroline Mathews, Anna Vallez, Jan Wier and Marilyn Voorhies — all local residents.
