FAIRBANKS RANCH — The De Anza Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated its 75th anniversary April 4. More than 45 DAR members and guests gathered at Fairbanks Country Club to honor the special occasion.
The chapter began in Brawley, Calif., in 1934 but moved to San Diego in the 1960s. The current members reside primarily in the North County and meet nine times a year from September to June.
At the meeting, Regent Joanne Murphy presented the Community Service Medal to Joan Widmer, who was unaware she was to receive the prestigious award. To receive the Community Service Award, a recipient must have contributed to her community in an outstanding voluntary heroic, civic or benevolent manner.
DAR members volunteer more than 60,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award more than $150,000 in scholarships and financial aid each year to students and support schools for the underprivileged with annual donations exceeding $1 million.
At the luncheon the DAR members were also treated to a special presentation of arms by the Army/Navy Academy of Carlsbad. The four young men doing the honors were Tylor Bruns, Dolan Muller, Greg Elliott and William Walsh.
