Will be late again
State electeds will maintain their perfect record of never having a balanced budget approved on schedule. Controller John Ching has served notice it will be necessary to begin issuing vouchers and IOUs in August. Some scheduled projects will be postponed. Last year’s dithering went into July. However, an agreement may be reached sooner this year becuz there is a general election in November and electeds will want to be out soon to shmooze voters.
Voting by mail
Usta be you had to have a reason to vote by mail. It’s no longer the case. Registrar of Voters reports more and more folks are voting in the comfort of their home. One downside is wannabe electeds and those pushing propositions are having to start their propaganda barrages earlier in order to influence early mail voters. The number of mail voters in the recent primary election is expected to be announced momentarily.
Free admission for troops
O’side’s Cal Surf Museum on Pier View Way is offering free admission through Labor Day to military personnel and their families. Surfing has been a major sport in O’side for decades and the museum provides a comprehensive account of its growth. Worth viewing.
Fairs compete for entertainment
There is a long piece in the June 4 issue of the L.A. Times regarding the difficulty fairs are facing booking suitable entertainment. The growing number of casinos and show venues is working to the advantage of acts that are available particularly during the summer. County Fair General Manager Tim Fennell said at a board of directors meeting recently that Del Mar started its grandstand talent search last summer and signed some contracts in the fall. The fair seeks performers suitable for family entertainment and also programs that appeal to varied tastes.
Golden anniversary
San Dieguito Garden Club recently observed its golden anniversary with a special gala and also a fundraiser to beef up its dwindling coffers. One of its popular activities is helping to maintain the Hamilton Children’s Garden at San Diego Botanic Garden on Quail Gardens Drive.
$110 mil. budget
While most cities, not only in the county but throughout the state, have struggled to develop a balanced budget, C’bad came up with its $110 million operating document in plenty of time and received the OK from council electeds. According to reports it was accomplished without using a meat cleaver on expenditures and programs.
Flower Capital golf course
An application to set up a reserve fund in lieu of making an annual loan payment by Carltas Co., part owner of Encinitas Golf Course, failed to receive council approval. Several residents, including Sheila Cameron, former mayor, spoke against it. Carltas would have made a payment to the reserve fund instead for the next three years. Encinitas Ranch Golf Authority, or ERGA, manages the affairs of the facility. Decision was made to agendize the application for further future public consideration rather than have it appear as a consent calendar item.
Onramps ramped up
Meters on north onramps feeding I-5 off Birmingham Drive, Santa Fe Drive and Encinitas Boulevard are being installed. Improvements will include ramp meters for traffic control, minor road widening, drainage and resurfacing. Project is expected to last a year and is being done by Caltrans.
Flower Capital Hall of Famer
Don Pierce, a leading jockey in the 1960s and 1970s who is now retired in the Flower Capital, has been inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame at Saratoga Springs New York. He joins jockey Julie Krone, also retired, who lives in C’bad with her husband Jay Hovday, senior Daily Racing Form writer, and their young daughter, Lorelei. Pierce was a highly popular rider at Del Mar where he racked up his share of trips to the winner’s circle.
Rice exhibit
A Lilian J. Rice exhibit is available for public viewing at Solbeach City Hall Gallery until June 30. Rice was a noted architect in the area particularly in Rancho Santa Fe. The exhibit is coordinated by Solbeach resident Diane Welch, who has just published a book on Rice’s work.
Hooray for Sean
El Camino High School math teacher Sean Nank is one of 100 math instructors in the nation to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in the instruction of science and math. No small honor considering that only one other teacher in the Golden State received the distinction.
Fee hike
Don’t be surprised if in the near future the power companies are asking consumers for a fee increase. For the past year a Bay Area energy company and others spent money like drunken lawmakers on a right to vote proposition that in reality was to keep out or limit competition. Wise voters saw what it was and said “no thanks.”
