CARLSBAD — The CCFR (Carlsbad Charitable Foundation) an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, doled out a large sum of money at its fifth annual Grants Award Ceremony last month.
The event attracted more than 500 members and guests at the city of Carlsbad Faraday Building.
This year, CCF gifted a total of $107,403 by recognizing five Carlsbad-based programs that enrich the community both artistically and culturally.
Grant recipients included the Carlsbad Community Theatre Showcase Company for $18,613; Carlsbad Music Festival for $15,080; The Hacienda Project for $25,238; Harps in the City for $15,663; and, Shakespeare Network in the amount of $32,809.
“CCF invests in and celebrates Carlsbad,” said Tom Applegate, incoming CCF board chair. “This community specific effort meets emerging needs of Carlsbad by encouraging and increasing responsible and effective philanthropy by those living and working in Carlsbad.”
CCF members took an active part in their final decision process through their Grants Committee. Arts and culture was the focus. Applegate said that its committee developed and reviewed grant guidelines and conducted site visits. After a thorough process, the votes were cast to programs that have stirred the greatest impact.
“The CCF grants support activities and programs that unify and inspire Carlsbad residents of all ages to improve our community through the arts,” Applegate said. “The goal of the Arts and Culture grant cycle is to support programs that make Carlsbad a great place in which to live, work and play.”
In the last five years, CCF has awarded more than $303,000 during their annual ceremonies. To date, they are 152 members strong. Applegate said they are always looking for new members who want to make a positive difference in the community.
George Wooldridge, CCF Grants Committee chair, said they were extremely honored to support projects that advance the arts and culture of their wonderful city.
“CCF allows all of us to make an impact greater than we could alone,” Wooldridge said.
Applegate wants people to know that this year also marked the first distribution of grants in Carlsbad from the “Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program.” This opportunity will take place for the next three years.
The late Matt McLaughlin of Rancho Bernardo, he said, left a generous legacy gift to The San Diego Foundation for use by the affiliate foundations in North County.
The original grant monies raised by CCF was $53,701, but with the help of the Matt McLaughlin program, that number skyrocketed to $107,403.
“We’re deeply honored to recognize these five outstanding contributors to arts and culture in Carlsbad,” said Hollyce Phillips, outgoing CCF board chair. “And, thanks to the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here program, we were able to double our impact and fund all five of the proposals recommended by our hardworking grants committee.”
In addition to the grants, Applegate said they have raised more than $370,000 for a permanent endowment that will support upcoming Carlsbad causes. With an eye to the future, their endowment goal is $10 million.
