ENCINITAS — Encinitas has shared a sister-city relationship with the city of Amakusa, Japan for nearly 23 years. Since that time, many visits between delegates of students, teachers, nurses, firefighters, community members and city officials have taken place and many friendships have been forged.
The city was happy to report that its friends in Amakusa were safe following the recent disaster in Japan. However, many thousands of people have lost their lives and entire Japanese communities have been destroyed, according to the city’s Senior Analyst Michael C. Stauffer.
Many in this community have expressed interest in providing some sort of financial assistance for the Japanese relief efforts and in directing that support to the appropriate Japanese relief agencies according to. Stauffer has been in contact with representatives of Amakusa and expressed the community’s desire to provide assistance. In response, representatives of Amakusa have agreed to direct whatever financial assistance provided to the appropriate Japanese relief agencies.

Encinitas, CA 92024. Make checks payable to the city of Encinitas or drop them by Stauffer’s city hall office through April 8.
