Duck Derby, chili cook-off planned

DEL MAR — The Rotary Club of Del Mar will host a new community event, The Chili & Quackers Challenge from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. The free event features a Ducky Derby in the ocean and a Chili Cook-Off.
Ducky Derby adoption and Chili Cook-off registration forms are available online at www.sites.google/chiliquackerschallenge or at www.DelMarRotary.org.
At the Ducky Derby, set for 4:30 p.m., the rubber ducks will be released in the ocean on a course set up by the Del Mar Lifeguards. The owners of the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line will win great prizes, including a new HDTV, a Netbook and a Wii game. Participants can adopt ducks for only $10 each or multiple ducks can be purchased through special discounted packs. You do not have to attend the event to purchase ducks. Winners, if not present, will be contacted. The first-year goal is to sell 2,000 ducks for the derby.
The Chili Cook-Off, featuring restaurant and individual divisions, begins at 5:15 p.m. Restaurants will be charged $50 to enter, while individuals can participate at a cost of $20. Celebrity judges will be on hand to choose the winners. In addition to those two winners, a special “Crowd’s Choice” will be awarded to the chef of the chili that was sampled the most. Restaurants must provide five gallons of chili for the event, while individuals must have at least two gallons available. Patrons can purchase tickets to enjoy the chili for $1 per taste, in $5 packs.
A beer and wine tent will also be available for those guests over the age of 21.
“This will be a fun way to support Del Mar Rotary’s charitable work,” Sharyn Daly, Chili and Quackers Challenge co-chairwoman said. “The more folks help Del Mar Rotary, the more us Rotarians can go out and improve the lives of the less fortunate.”
Corporate sponsorships for this community event are available. For more information on sponsorships, contact Sharyn Daly at (858) 755-0075.
“We are excited to host a day of family fun, while at the same time raise awareness about all of the organizations that Del Mar Rotary supports,” said Val Myers, Chili and Quackers Challenge co-chairwoman. “It is always great to have a good time while helping out those in need.”
