CARLSBAD — On June 25, law enforcement agents from around the county converged in the city of Carlsbad in an effort to increase summer highway safety.

From 7 a.m. to noon, approximately 31 officers issued 213 citations for moving violations, according to Lynn Diamond, a spokeswoman for the Carlsbad Police Department.

“The reason why we do this is for the citizens’ safety,” Diamond said.

The citations included everything from excessive

speed to seat belt violations, she said.

Officers from the San Diego Police Department, San Diego Sheriff’s Department, La Mesa, El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido and Coronado participated in the detail, Diamond said.

“Our goal is to increase the safety of both tourists and residents driving on the roads through the special traffic enforcement detail,” said Carlsbad Traffic Officer Alonso DeVelasco in a press release.

“Having assistance from the officers throughout the county helps us bring attention to these important safety issues as we enter the height of the summer season,” DeVelasco said.

Throughout the year, Diamond said county law enforcement agencies share responsibility by participating in details throughout the region. For example, she said the officers participating in the recent detail were paid by their representatives and Carlsbad would reciprocate by working other county details.

“It’s a way for the agencies to share resources and really put a focus effort on the key problems of traffic safety,” Diamond said.
