Council supports education, but not at cost to city
April 18, 2008
OCEANSIDE — A council discussion was held April 9 to consider supporting Oceanside Unified School District in opposing the governor’s budget proposal April 9.

Mayor Jim Wood voiced support for the district, but stopped short at the notion of writing a letter to the state. Wood said a letter might send the wrong message and take money from the city budget, which is already $4 million short.

Wood used the example of taking money from one source to pay another. “Don’t take money from the school district. Don’t take it from the city of Oceanside,” Wood said.

“We’re looking at some really tough budget times,” said Councilman Rocky Chavez, who requested the council discussion. Chavez said an investment in education is an investment in local economy.

A school district speaker urged people to write their Sacramento representatives and ask them to support children by supporting education funding.

City Manager Peter Weiss brought the discussion back to the relationship of state and local governments. Weiss said the relationship between the state and city governments need to be rebuilt. “Without this stability, we will be needing to look over our shoulders at the state. They have a unique way to pass on their problems to someone else,” Weiss said.

With lack of information on the state budget, the council limited action to voicing support for the Oceanside Unified School District.
