The healing touch of Hawaiian Power Flow
April 04, 2008
“Keep in touch — I need your skill.”

Billy Casper — legendary professional golfer

Each year in late August, I am employed to emcee the UCSD Longboard Invitational at Scripp’s Pier in La Jolla Shores. Here, the legends of surfing gather and compete and raise money for cancer cures. Last year I was on stage, struggling with a summer cold, when Pipeline legend Jock Sutherland approached to tell me about a Hawaiian guy who was sharing healing magic in the sand a few hundred yards away. Taking a break, I wandered down to where Akoni Apana was quietly and humbly helping to alleviate the pain of someone’s migraine, which he did in about three minutes by pressing just the right buttons.

I was up next and after ten minutes in Akoni’s capable hands, my cold symptoms disappeared, and I went back to blabbing on the microphone about surfers and surfing for the next four hours.

From time to time after that, I thought about what Akoni had done for me. But I was in good health and didn’t think I needed any help. Then, in mid-December of last year, I caught what would prove to be the most tenacious, the worst, the mother of all colds. Three months later, after trying various medicines, juice fasting, golden seal, Echinacea, reflexology, a chiropractor, an MD and a cleansing fast, I was no better. I would be OK for a day or two, then my cough would come roaring back and wake me up in the middle of the night. In a fog one morning, I noticed Akoni‘s card on my desk, called him and agreed to meet him in his Del Mar office the next day.

I am not a good patient and generally fidget in waiting rooms, imagining the worst. This time I waited in a peaceful garden, birds chirping while Kaaren Henderson, Akoni’s business coach, offered cool water and warm conversation. Akoni arrived in shorts and his trademark Aloha shirt, and sat down across from me, talking as if he and I were lifelong friends. When he sensed that I was finally relaxed, he asked me to follow him into a comfortable room, where I was directed to lie on matt placed on the floor.

The next hour and a half proved to be a revelation on how the body works, as Akoni explained each part of this gentle procedure. “From Kaaren I learned that we are hardwired into four body types: earth, air, fire and water and there are places on the body, the hands, face and toes that all correlate with the definition of who we are,” he said.

As Akoni, whose method is geared toward getting the blood moving, worked on me, I felt my sinuses and lungs clear along with various tingles in feet and fingertips, which, he explained, were the result of my blood flowing more freely.

About 90 minutes later, I rose from the floor mat as if waking from a pleasant dream. Strength and energy was renewed and I breathed easily. On the ride home I contemplated Hawaiian Power Flow and what it had done for me. While I had only known of Akoni for less than a year, numerous surf legends including Greg Noll and Rabbit Kekai have known him for a lot longer, and have testified to the gift of Hawaiian Power Flow. My bet is that Akoni Apana will make numerous appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in the next few years. Contact him before he’s world famous at (619) 986-0707.
