DEL MAR — A permit application to construct a roof over the horse show arena at the San Diego County Fairgrounds was approved by the State Coastal Commission during its March 6 meeting at Carmel, Calif.

Barry Nussbaum, chairman of the master plan/real estate committee of the 22nd District Agricultural Association (Del Mar Fairgrounds) reported at the March 11 board of directors meeting that the application was on the commission’s consent calendar, meaning it was approved without discussion. The city of Del Mar sent a letter to the commission indicating its support for the project.

The district will construct a 66-foot-high addition to the existing roof that covers the seating area but not the competition oval. Equestrian and other events will now be held at the arena throughout the year.

Nussbaum said the district is in the process of selecting a project manager. The project is expected to be completed in time for next year’s national horse show in April. Nussbaum said he credits Becky Bartling, deputy general manager, for working for the past four years to assure the improved arena will be the most environmentally sensitive to water quality, runoff and wastewater disposal.

Currently, the arena seats approximately 3,500 spectators. This will be expanded to 5,000.

Directors also approved four grandstand attractions for the fair that will be held June 14 through July 6. These include Doodlebops, a Disney troupe now touring nationally and attracting turnaway audiences, June 21; BB King, blues, June 26, Weird Al Yankovic, parody/satire/pop, June 30; and KC & the Sunshine Band, disco, July 4.
