SOLANA BEACH — The city of Solana Beach is currently gathering input from local residents for the design of a new city of Solana Beach sign, which would be located at the northern entrance to the city on Coast Highway 101.
According to Anita Edman, the city’s community services coordinator, it will replace the current sign that was made by both the Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society and the Del Mar-Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Club.
“The current sign is old, but it’s still in good shape and it was recently repainted,” Edman said. “With the permission of the Civic and Historical Society and the Rotary Club, we’re hoping to relocate it at another entrance to the city.”
A private donor has stepped forward to pay for the new sign, and currently there are two design proposals — both of which were created by members of the city’s Public Arts Advisory Commission, or PAAC.
One design features three large boulders, a sculpture of a seagull and a sign that reads “Solana Beach” in bold yellow letters.
The other design is somewhat similar but features more landscaping and vegetation around it.
The public review process is open until Jan. 28. Edman said she has already been flooded with e-mails providing feedback.
“I got 60 e-mails in one day, which shows that a lot of people in our small community care about this,” she said. “Right now it’s pretty even. Only three people hated both designs.”
On Jan. 29, the PAAC will hold a public meeting to review all the information that was gathered.
“At that point, hopefully we can come up with a recommendation for the City Council,” Edman said. “My gut feeling is that it will probably be a combination of both designs.”
