DEL MAR — The racetrack is no longer the only place to catch some finish line glory as the inaugural Hoehn Motors Del Mar Criterium cycling series hits the fairgrounds parking lot.
“Cycling culture is a healthy and fun culture to be a part of,” said event creator Kam Zardouzian. “There is a very strong cycling culture in San Diego, and I hope this event helps introduce more people to the sport as well.”
The series kicked off April 5, and will continue April 19, May 3 and May 24.
Registration begins at 2:15 p.m. on race days, and the first race begins at 3 p.m.
Geoff Doyle, the race director for the event, said that the series’ first two races ended with impressive breakaways at the finish line.
“There was really impressive, strong riding out there,” Doyle said.
Zardouzian said he always felt the main parking lot would be a perfect place for a cycling course, and after a year of hard work and negotiations with the 22nd Agricultural District, he secured the site and picked up several sponsors along the way.
Sponsors for the event include Swami’s Cycling club, one of North County’s largest cycling clubs with over 200 members.
“This is a clear example that with a little vision and a lot of hard work, people can come together to support an event that benefits the community and companies that support cycling,” said Dave Callender, president of Swami’s Cycling.
Other sponsors include B&L Bike and Sports shop, Clif Bar, Active.com and Hoehn Motors.
Zardouzian said he expects 2,000 racers and spectators over the course of the series, and he is already planning more races for next year.
“I see this event really expanding over time,” Zardouzian said. “I want to have sponsor tents all over the parking lot and races and events for the whole family and all levels to enjoy.”
