VISTA — Supporters of The Angel’s Depot have asked for it since 2006, and now it is here — the Senior Brown Box available to anyone 60 years of age or older for a $30 donation. The Senior Brown Box contains 23 pounds of nutritious, nonperishable, easily prepared food to make approximately 21 meals.
In an effort to help support their “Senior Food-for-a-Week” 21-Meal Emergency Boxes given free to seniors whose income is $950 or less per month, The Angel’s Depot has launched the Senior Brown Box. Touted as a fundraising program, the Senior Brown Box is also being promoted as nutritious convenience shopping for seniors.
“This hearty box of food is well priced with nutritious, easily prepared food choices for seniors and it is very convenient,” said Susan Hall, founder and executive director of Angel’s Depot. “We have done all the shopping for the seniors. I believe we all need to think about what our elder family members have in their pantries and what we can do to help them.”
According to Pam Smith, director of the San Diego County Department of Aging and Independence Services, approximately 50,000 senior citizens live in poverty in this county. This statistic motivated Susan Hall to start The Angel’s Depot to help feed them.
The Senior Brown Boxes are available at The Angel’s Depot from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 1495 Poinsettia Ave., Suite 151, Vista. Age I.D. will be required. Multiple boxes are available, each for a $30 donation. If you are not a senior and wish to pick up a Senior Brown Box for someone else, bring a copy of their identification indicating they are 60 years of age or older.
