It’s that time of the year when thousands of runners, joggers, walkers, strollers and even an occasional crawler or two converge on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas for the 4th Annual Surfing Madonna Beach Run 5K/10K/15K Oct. 15.

Sporting the well-earned title of largest beach run in the country, this event brings people from all over the United States to participate and be a part of the cause to “Save the Ocean.”

The event is organized by the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project nonprofit and since Dec 2013, nearly $200,000 in proceeds have been donated to benefit local ocean conservation projects, humanitarian programs, ocean awareness youth education programs, and marine biology scholarships to graduating seniors to name a few.

Every one of all abilities is welcomed to lace up their shoes and join the fun! A beautiful, sunny October day in paradise featuring a 5K/10K/15K Run/Walk which traverses a low tide course along the water’s edge, passing by famous local beaches such as Stone Steps, Beacon’s, Ponto and Swami’s.

This event is located in National Geographic’s No. 4-ranked, “Best Surf Town in the World,” Encinitas!

There’s a lot of bang for your buck. All entry fees include: super soft race shirt, huge finisher’s medal, goodie bag, refreshments at the finish line, free race photos, bib number and timing chip, and don’t forget the prize money too — $16,000 is up for grabs this year! So, you know that the best of the best will be there. Competitor Magazine named this beach run to be in the top five “Best 5K/10K/15K’s” in the nation in 2015.

One of the event highlights this year includes a live performance by Jack Tempchin, singer/songwriter for The Eagles, who is scheduled to play on stage around 1:30 p.m.

Other highlights include misters on the course to keep everyone cool, eco-friendly boxed water at the finish line and a free bag check area for your personal items.

Race Organizer Robert Nichols chuckles as he states, “The participants will be happier than a seagull with a French fry.”

Even if you’re not a runner or walker, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers will receive a race shirt and a medal to take home with them. The volunteer information is posted on their website listed below.
