OCEANSIDE — A community meeting was held in late May to discuss future improvements for Buccaneer Park facilities. The popular park is located directly across the street from Buccaneer Beach and features a grass field, a basketball court, picnic tables, a cafe, restrooms and outdoor showers.
An informational meeting was held to inform residents that input on restrooms and cafe improvements would be gathered this summer.
The city has completed renovations to most of its dated beach restrooms and shower facilities over the past year. The final sites to see improvements will be Buccaneer Park, Tyson Street Park and facilities adjacent to the pier amphitheater.
Improvements to pier plaza facilities and Tyson Street Park are close to breaking ground. Both sites went through an extensive public and Coastal Commission review process, which guided final plans.
Initial plans for pier plaza facilities, to include a grand two-story building that would house lifeguard operations and a public viewing deck, were nixed by the community in favor of a simpler, single-story building that suits basic needs.
Final plans include 14 unisex single-stall toilets, a beach maintenance office, storage and a police garage. The historic restroom building will be remodeled for police use. Beach access from Mission Avenue, the plaza area and parking lot will also see upgrades.
The sewer lift station at the pier will be relocated as part of renovations. This will address unpleasant site odors.
Tyson Street Park will see a new 14 single-stall restroom building.
Construction at the pier plaza and Tyson Street Park is expected to begin in November 2017, and be completed in spring 2019.
Last year the city also improved beach restrooms and shower facilities at Breakwater Way, Sportfisher Drive, Wisconsin Street and on the pier. Improvements ranged from interior upgrades to complete teardowns and rebuilds.
Beach stairways at South Pacific Street, Ash Street, Tyson Street, Civic Center Drive, Windward Way and Cassidy Street were also replaced.
The city has yet to set a date for the next community meeting on Buccaneer Park improvements.
