VISTA — An effort to make improvements to downtown Vista has made headway.

The city of Vista completed the first phase of improvements, which began more than two years ago. The improvements include reconfiguration of lanes on South Santa Fe Avenue, widening sidewalks and upgrading streetlights and landscaping. Vista’s first roundabout was also constructed at Eucalyptus Avenue and South Santa Fe Avenue, making it a three-way intersection.

The first phase is complete with a 60-foot gateway arch over South Santa Fe Avenue at Main Street that reads Paseo Santa Fe, which Vista officials celebrated on April 5.

City leaders hope to further improve the downtown area with two more phases of improvements. The ultimate goal of the city is to fill the downtown area with retail shops, restaurants and living spaces.
