DEL MAR — Story poles depicting the outline and height of the new civic center complex and parking structure have been installed at the existing City Hall at 1050 Camino del Mar.

They are intended to help neighbors, city staff and members of the decision-making evaluate the project application. They also show planned new grade levels.

The poles were erected a few weeks before the formal Design Review Board hearing, set for Dec. 16, when members will make a project recommendation to City Council.

They will remain in place until at least Jan.4, when council is scheduled to make a final decision on the entitlements, or permits that allow a project to go forward, such as design review, land conservation, tree removal and certification of the environmental impact report.

The $17.8 million project is currently in the design phase. Groundbreaking is expected to take place in February, with construction lasting about 18 months.

The complex will feature a City Hall for administrative functions, a Town Hall for community gatherings and government meetings, a large plaza to serve a variety of outdoor uses including the farmers market, a catering kitchen and 160 parking spaces in a surface lot and parking structure.

About 10 parking spaces at the existing City Hall are currently inaccessible. Visitors should use caution in the lot.

Blue flags indicate where the City Hall and Town Hall will be located. Pink flags depict the placement of the parking structure.
