Boating season sets sail in Oceanside

OCEANSIDE — The launch of the 2015 Boating Season in Oceanside begins officially with an Opening Day ceremony at 1 p.m. April 12 at Oceanside Yacht Club in the parking lot, and the public is invited. A boat parade will begin about noon and may be viewed from anywhere around the Harbor.

San Luis Rey Sail and Power Squadron (SLRSPS) offers seminars and boating certifications in classes at the Yacht Club, 1950 N Harbor Drive. A new California law has been passed requiring Boating Certification by 2018. Boating classes are offered by the San Luis Rey division of the national 501(C)3 non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting boating safety and advancing skills in navigation and seamanship.
The cost covers materials, text, proctored National Exam for the Certifications and postage to mail certificates. Instructors are volunteers who have completed advanced coursework and have also been certified and mentored as instructors.
North County residents may enroll in several advanced certifications during the next few months. The Seamanship Course, April 9 through June 11, provides five Saturdays on the water.
Advanced Piloting run March 21 through April 28 and Sailing will be June 16 through Aug. 11.  SLRSPS also coordinates with San Diego Sail and Power Squadron, which is offering course in Jr. and Electronic Navigation.
