Oceanside woman busy with AmeriCorps

OCEANSIDE — Brianna Ortiz, of Oceanside, has given this year to serving with AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps.
AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps is a 10-month service program for adults from 18 to 25 years old. Ortiz started the program on Feb. 10 and will complete her program in November 2014. She started in temporary teams for training for about a month, known as CTI. The campus where Brianna was sent is in Vicksburg, Miss. After the month of training done with their temporary teams, everyone is informed of who makes up their official teams. Ortiz’s team is called Coast 2, and they are specially trained in planning, and have been designated a planning team.
Coast 2 was deployed out to Washington D.C. to work at the FEMA headquarters there. Ortiz is part of the FEMA Corps branch, which means that she and her team works directly with FEMA. Coast 2 has been specifically working on FEMA’s crisis management system called WebEOC, and they’re job is to learn it and then teach it to other personnel, to be certain everyone is equipped to handle a disaster.
According to her teammate Miles Morgan, “Brianna is an astounding person and is having the experience of her life in this program. She is a very hard worker and she seems to always be full of energy. In her free time, she likes hanging out with the friends she has made in the program. Thankfully, the team has PT a few days a week so she can play soccer with them.”
Ortiz and her teammates go everywhere in a 15-passenger van, which can be hectic at times, but they tend to view it as an experience of a lifetime. Aside from the skills she has gained, her time with Americorp has connected her with teammates from all parts of the country. Her team includes members from New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Washington State, Michigan and Chicago, giving her the opportunity to expand her world view.
