COAST CITIES — Oceanside resident Patricia McArdle, an author and environmentalist, was honored by Girl Scouts San Diego as one of San Diego’s 10 Cool Women of 2014.

The honor reflects the winners’ personal and professional achievements, leadership and service to the community to be role models for girls.

“Like Girl Scouts, our 2014 Cool Women make the world a better place,” said Jo Dee C. Jacob, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts San Diego. “We are proud to honor them.”

McArdle is known for her debut novel “Farishta,” winner of the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. It draws on her assignment as an American diplomat in Afghanistan. Watching Afghan children gather wood for fuel sparked McArdle’s crusade: promoting solar cooking cookers like one she built as a Girl Scout. The sustainable energy activist also served as one of the first naval officers at a remote U.S. base in Morocco, a speaker for Al Gore’s The Climate Project and leader of her daughters’ Brownie troop.

Other winners were:

— Melissa D’Arabian – chef and author

— Ann Durst, SHCJ, J.D. – Casa Cornelia Law Center founder

— Zoe Ghahremani – writer, artist
