Summer acting camps open for all ages

CARLSBAD — New Village Arts invites youngsters of all ages to be part of its summer acting class series beginning June 23 and running through July at 2787 State St. in the village.

First up is Kids Act: “Rikki Tikki Tavi” for ages 9 to 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 23 through June 27. Enrollment cost is $200. Students will perform an adapted script by Rudyard Kipling and a performance will be held in the New VillageArts Theatre.

Kids Act: Going on Stage is for 4 to 6 year olds from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesdays June 24 through Aug. 19. Enrollment cost is $159. Students create their own characters and plays and will perform their original plays, along with a short piece of Shakespearean verse, in front of scenery that they’ve created.

From noon to 3:30 p.m. July 7 through July 11, will be the Shakespeare Network: Acting 1 Contemporary class for ages 14 to 18. The cost is $150. This is an intensive acting course for teens serious about theater, with an in-depth approach to modern theater styles, including scene study, script analysis and performance techniques. This class is for teens looking to take their acting to the next level. Taught by Justin Lang.

Next is the Shakespeare Network: Acting 2 Classical camp from noon to 3:30 p.m. July 14 through July 18, also for ages 14 to 18 who are looking to deepen their connection to all theater forms. This intensive acting course delves into the work of William Shakespeare and other classical authors to increase a student’s understanding of language, style and characterization. Classes will include scene work, monologue work, analysis and performance. The cost is $150.

From 1 to 3 p.m. July 21 through July 25 is Kids Act: Teen Improv Camp for ages  11 to 14. The cost is $135. Students will learn the art of improvisational acting and core techniques that will help them make strong character choices, improve listening skills on stage and gain confidence while performing in front of an audience.

Following that will be Kids Act: Verdi, from 10 a.m. to noon July 28 through Aug. 1 for ages  5 to 8. The cost is $135. Students will perform the story, “Verdi,” written and illustrated by Carlsbad resident, Janell Cannon. Cannon will make a special appearance during the camp to lead them in painting their own scenery for the final performance on the last day of camp.
