Green Week comes to Oceanside

OCEANSIDE — Join the city of Oceanside for its fifth annual Green Week celebration from April 22 through April 28. Green Week offers a week of free community events to celebrate Earth Day and raise environmental awareness.April 25, the Green Oceanside team will partner with the Oceanside Museum of Art to present the Environmental Film Festival, offering dinner and the movie “Trashed,” starring Jeremy Irons. This film will examine the extent and effects of the global waste problem. This evening will also include an appearance from Capt. Charles Moore, one of the stars of “Trashed,” as well as the founder of the Algalita Marine Research Institute.

There will be showings of other environmental films made by Oceanside students, as well as view OMA’s limited exhibition “Enviroscapes: Jen Trute Retrospective.” In addition, Pier View Way, immediately in front of OMA, will be closed for the evening to accommodate food vendors. And don’t forget to check out the silent auction to benefit Green Week Student contests.

April 27, Green Week offers several events:

— The Loma Alta Creek and Beach Cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon, will be held. For more information and to register, visit

— The Green Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jr. Seau Beach Amphitheater. There will be a mobile bike repair company available, community performances and demonstrations, live entertainment, eateries and the award ceremony for the Oceanside Student Create to Educate contest.

— A free electronics recycling will be available along with data destruction from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Parking Lot 24, between Pacific and Myers Streets.

Green Week will offer compost workshops for Oceanside residents only, hosted by Agriservice, Inc. at 6 p.m. April 23 and at 8:30 a.m. April 27 at the El Corazon Senior Center. To register, go to

Lastly, a free oil filter exchange event will be held at O’Reilly Auto Parts at 3661 W. Mission Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28 for Oceanside residents. Recycle used oil filters in exchange for up to three free new oil filters of their choice, while supplies last.
