CARLSBAD — Carlsbad High School’s multiple award-winning CHSTV program, under the direction of Advisor Doug Green, has won a prestigious 2012 San Diego County Office of Education Innovative Video in Education (iVIE) Broadcast Journalism Award for its feature piece entitled “Rachel’s Story.” The award was presented to CHSTV students at a ceremony at the San Diego Civic Theater June 7.“Rachel’s Story” was created and produced by Hannah Bandimere, Brad Streicher, Seannie Bryan and Ciara Turner. Green said, “I am proud of these students, not only for their considerable broadcast skills but also for their empathy toward the subject matter.”
“Rachel’s Story” profiles a Poway High School student who has Asperger’s Syndrome. After being nominated for the school’s homecoming court as a cruel joke by a few bullies, she ultimately triumphs, thanks to her perseverance and support from her fellow students and the community. According to Green, “This touching story that deals with bullying, autism and community spirit needed to be told. Now it has been told, beautifully and movingly, by CHSTV students.”
