Body found at pier identified

OCEANSIDE — The body of a man who was discovered near the Oceanside Pier last weekend was identified Jan. 12.

At approximately 1 a.m. Jan. 8, a person passing by the 100 block of North The Strand found the decedent, Thomas Edwin White, 44.

“A 911 call was placed. Officers arrived, pulled him out of the water and confirmed the death without intervention,” according to a statement on the county’s Department of Medical Examiner website.

A cause-of-death ruling is pending completion and results of postmortem tests.

His time of injury causing death is listed as unknown.

White was unidentified for several days, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office, but was later successfully identified through his fingerprints.

“We always do fingerprints first, from those with different databases, such as the FBI or California ID. If those don’t work we use dental records,” said a San Diego County Medical Examiner investigator.

She said if fingerprints aren’t matched, the next step is a DNA identification process, where blood or bone marrow samples from the deceased are used to help find their identity.

White’s family has been notified, she said.

The Oceanside Police Department is the investigating agency in White’s case.
